Mentoring Gail Hugman

It all started for me with a frantic message on Facebook from Gail saying “I haven’t heard from you!” For some reason we never did manage to understand none of her messages or emails had ever got through to me. We never found out where the messages actually went, luckily Gail is not the sort of person to give up without exhausting every avenue.

Within the first couple of minutes of our discovery call I was hooked on the book she wanted to write. This would be a book with a mission to help parents, that would ultimately change children’s lives. The idea of it lingered long after our initial chat, and when Gail booked her first set of sessions I was thrilled.

Even though Gail had published before through a small press we started by looking at what would be the right way for Gail to publish moving forward, and developing a strong writing process. I like to make sure that my writers have a strong start, because this enables them to write not just this book, but all the books to come.

From writing habits we worked through self edits, my edit, Beta readers, and finally a professional editor. Before researching cover design, luckily Gail’s previous books had a good basic design that we didn’t have to tweak too much to create something up to date - a professional book cover design should never be underestimated. Because people absolutely do judge a book by its cover.

One of the great joys of our working relationship for me was helping to drive book marketing, which we started about six months before release. Working on how, and when to use social media, content ideas, a new mailing list and helping Gail find opportunities to appear on podcasts and in magazines. Watching her viewing figures and engagement climb has been really rewarding .

Gail always took an interest in the process, what we were doing and why, and although sometimes I had to reassured her that her questions were better answered down the line. No matter what was going on Gail would be ready to crack on.

Having had two authors publish a book they were passionate about recently, I can say that it is easier to keep going in the tricky times if you really believe that your book will make a difference to the world. As all have my mentees have heard me say at one point or another ‘writing isn’t hard like being down a coal mine, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy’.

We always promised that once the book was finished we would meet to celebrate, and two weeks after the ebooks release (we couldn’t wait the extra week for the paperback) we met for cake fest in Gail’s lovely garden studio where she works. It was like getting together with a dear friend, and hearing more of the stories behind the book and the children she has worked with over the years was hilarious and fascinating.

As you can probably tell I really loved working on Gail’s project with her, and feel proud to have helped her on her way. So you have heard what I have to say about it, here is what Gail had to say.

“I started writing a book over a year ago and wasn't making progress very quickly. I met Eden Gruger during an online course we both attended during the pandemic. I had no idea what a writing mentor did but knew I needed someone to make me accountable and who might give me a little encouragement. I knew what I wanted to write, but I also avoided writing unless I was 'in the mood' - which meant the book might never get written!

I was impressed from the very start with Eden. She was obviously efficient and knowledgeable. She assured me that she wasn't going to 'interfere' with my writing process, but would suggest putting in some structure. I decided when I would write, would block it out in the diary and, as if by magic, I would write - because I knew Eden would ask for a progress report next time I saw her! I booked blocks of sessions - five at a time - even though there was the option to pay as you go.

I enjoyed each session with Eden and found them good value for money. She was suitably direct when needed and empathetic and sympathetic when called for. She clearly understands the journey of an author, and during my moments of challenge, she would be very reassuring explaining that it is 'perfectly normal' and giving assurance about the 'next step'. It would not have occurred to me to engage Beta readers - people who read and give feedback on the manuscript - before it goes to professional editing, .

Eden referred me to an excellent editor and designer who obviously wanted us to produce the best book possible. Once the editing process was complete, Eden guided me to putting my book on the platforms for international distribution.

The process of writing my latest book was so much more enjoyable because it felt as though Eden was on the journey with me to get the book done. She helped with marketing, online promotion and distribution. I have absolutely no hesitation whatsoever recommending Eden Gruger to anyone who is wanting to write and publish a book”.

Mentoring Alison Middleton

Alison approached me about mentoring when she had almost half of her first draft. That in itself was nothing unusual, having set a self imposed deadline of six months to get the book finished and published, however was.

To make the process that bit more challenging, while writing and learning about publishing, Alison was also in the middle of rebranding her business. Including a complete new name, logo, and website.

Which meant my being part of a larger team for the first time in years, as we negotiated how the book would fit into the website and a new email list.

In normal circumstances I wouldn’t have recommended a total newbie to consider doing both at the same time, or with such a short deadline. But in Alison’s case the need to publish in March was a real one, her mission was to write a book to help students through their exams nerves, and guide teachers and caregivers to support their pupils and children.

Having been an exam invigilator, hypnotherapist and an Institute for Integrative Nutrition health coach, Alison has had extensive first hand experience of people struggling with panic, and the physical effects of prolonged anxiety. That desire to help, and the steely determination that lay under that desire gave me total faith that together we could pull it off.

Alison found writing the drafts the easier part of the process, and I never had to remind her to stick to our agreed writing sessions. But the process also had some tricky elements, like many writers Alison found editing was sometimes uncomfortable. In my first read through there were a couple of sections that had to be removed all together as they covered areas that weren’t suitable for young adult readers. Like the uses of essential oils and dietary changes (despite both being useful tools for fighting anxiety).

Even though these things were hard to hear, Alison trusted my knowledge, took my advice and created a book that we are both incredibly proud of.

But don’t assume for one moment that I things all my own way, we didn’t agree on the cover straight away. I suggested a crisp white background, but Alison felt it was too stark, wanting to keep more of what she had originally envisioned. She wanted (and kept) her blue background, which just happens to be the blue of her new branding.

It was fun to have a client with such strong ideas, and I learnt a lot from working with her, about myself, as well as her business and her book. Which I hope will be the first of a series, as Alison has a lot to share.

So you have heard what it was like from my side, but what did Alison have to say about the experience?

“I chose to work with Eden as she could give me one to one support and knew she would be brutally honest with me and really importantly, could help me achieve a rather ambitious task of publishing a book within a very tight deadline. Literally within six months. When I contacted her in September 23 I hadn’t written my book, now in March 24 I am a published author.

I have to pinch myself to believe that together we have made that happen, I would not have achieved that without Eden’s guidance and support.

It has been a real journey of learning and have appreciated her wealth of knowledge of the book industry and all it’s nuances. It is one thing to actually write the book but understanding the industry and publishing aspect a whole world I knew nothing about and Eden’s knowledge and experience is invaluable.

I also appreciated her honesty and not being afraid to be direct and put me right on a thing or two! She has rightly challenged me. At times there have been things I’ve not wanted to hear but had to and I appreciate her for her calmness and perseverance.

Thank you Eden for being authentic and helping achieve one of my goals!”

TEENS by Alison Middleton Timms

I have just published my first ever book under Eden's expert guidance. Thank you Eden! We got there didn't we??

I chose to work with Eden as she could give me one to one support and knew she would be brutally honest with me and really importantly, could help me achieve a rather ambitious task of publishing a book within a very tight deadline! Alliance of Independent Authors Partner Member

If you follow me on social media, you will probably have heard my exciting news. A few weeks after applying, I heard that my Make Your Book A Reality mentoring services have been vetted and approved by The Alliance of Independent Authors.

It was a fabulous feeling to have it confirmed that it’s not just me, and my clients saying I can do this, and I’m good at it. But a global organisation that works on behalf of indie authors is saying it too!

It would be an understatement to say that I am delighted to be accepted. Being a partner member, appearing in their directory and in the database of approved suppliers feels like the culmination of a lot of hard work.

Like writers everywhere I have doubted myself, and sometimes a book you love isn’t quite as well received as you think it’s going to be. But that is definitely part of the writing life, and you have to manage your disappointment and get on with the next book.

So, when I first started writing what would become my audio classes in 2020, I worried about how they would be received and whether they would be any good. Luckily, everyone who tried them had great things to say, and by the end of 2020 helped by being trapped in my house due to a global pandemic I had fourteen classes available.

By 2023 the individual classes had grown into a Masterclass Membership, allowing people to build on the lessons to create not just one book, but an author business.

Helping other writers is my mission in life and proving that even when life throws some serious shade your way, you can still make a grab for your dreams.

Healing Conversations | Eps 52

Healing Conversations podcast with Einav Avni. The secret to self empowerment | Eps 52

Einav invited me to be on her Podcast, and this is why we are a great fit! she says,
"for most of my life, I didn't know who I was or what I was doing here. I floated, doing a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, but still not knowing.

For a long while, I was a System Tester for Tesco, and then, after my Master's I became a User Experience Designer - a career that I loved very much. 10 years later, I realised this, too, was not my calling and in 2017 I jumped ship and went on to do my Coaching and NLP (master practitioner) training.

This felt so much better! I LOVED working with my clients, and to begin with I niched into 'confidence and empowerment coaching', but slowly, I started to see that I can bring the same wisdom into the healing field and get results that are both profound and nearly literally, life-saving!

Today I work with people with chronic illnesses, chronic pain and other unexplained medical conditions to heal and reverse their symptoms so they can have the freedom to live the life they want".

With my own invisible disabilities I had to share my philosophy.

What do you do when life gives you lemons? For Eden Gruger, it was the chance to get back into what she always knew she wanted to do - write! Eden is the author of 6 books, despite everyone who ever knew her saying she wasn't the writer kind...!
In this conversation, we talk about Eden's writing path, as well as her belief that when you look at what you CAN do, rather than everything you CAN'T - you find a way to move forward in ways you never thought were possible!

Everyday Magazine Article

It was my absolute pleasure to write this article for Everyday Magazine, 'When your superpower is being invisible: Lived Experience of Disability.

"This is in no way a bash the NHS, or the hardworking social worker’s piece, this is my lived experience of invisible disability, the services who are working to support me. And the ways that they don’t quite work in the way that the Social Care Institute of Excellence had in mind. An invisible disability is a life-altering condition that is not apparent just by looking at someone. Guess what? This covers 1 in 7 of the UK’s population – so we are everywhere, you just don’t know it, because our superpower is being invisible".
